Litter Robot LRII Automatic SelfCleaning Litter Box Black

Posted on 01 August 2009 by admin

The Litter Robot is the automatic, self cleaning litter box \'that really works\'. When your cat enters the litter chamber (globe) a weight activated sensor detects the presence of your cat. After 7 minutes a clean cycle starts with the slow rotation of the globe in a counter-clockwise direction. The rotation of the globe sifts and separates clumps from the clean litter (clumping litter) and deposits all waste in the large capacity drawer lined with a standard kitchen garbage bag. The globe then returns to its home position with a clean, level bed of litter ready for the next use. The Litter Robot has no rakes or wires to jam, clog, or break. Its simplicity and durable construction ensure a long life of service. The Litter Robot operates on 12VDC and is easy to set up - just add litter to the globe and plug it in. Backed by an 18 month warranty and 30 day money back guarantee on purchase price.more info

this is the first and only automatic litter box we’ve ever owned, so we don’t have the perspective that would come from having owned other automatic boxes. that said, however, we L-O-V-E our Litter Robot. in fact, we love it so much we ordered a second one.

we have 5 cats, and as such, i lived in constant fear of turning into one of “those people” whose whole house smells like one big litter box and they don’t even realize it. to keep our little apartment from smelling bad, we were constantly scooping out several regular, hooded litter boxes, and even then, the place had a tendency to get a little smelly by the time we got around to cleaning boxes every day. plus, cleaning litter boxes was eating up so much of our time, and we were going through so much litter, so fast. so finally we decided to break down and get an automatic litter box.

there are no cheap automatic litter boxes, so i wanted to really do my homework before selecting one. most automatic litter boxes involve a rake automatically being dragged through litter after the cat uses the box. i also saw one type where the litter was on a very slowly rotating conveyor belt which would instead bring the litter to the rake. based on numerour reviews, the problems with these included clumps breaking up and litter overflowing, and from what i’ve read, they’re generally short-lived. also, non-clay clumping litters don’t work well with the rake-type automatic boxes. and with most of these boxes, you have to keep buying cartridges to collect waste, so the cartridges are a continuous expense. then there’s the “flushing” litter box. it seemed like a pretty good idea, except that you need to be able to put it near a toilet or somewhere with water pipes. this isn’t an option for everyone, and in our small apartment, there was no place we could do this.

then there was the litter robot. it sounded great. we were skeptical at first, especially considering the hefty price of a Litter Robot, but after reading many good reviews and hearing about the 90-day money back guarantee, we decided we had nothing to lose and we ordered one.

there are a few down-sides to this box. it’s pricey, but totally worth it. also, it’s BIG!! i had my Litter Robot shipped to my in-law’s house, and when i went to pick it up, try as i might, i couldn’t get the box to fit in my Prizm. as far as floor-space goes, it doesn’t take up any more room than your typical large litter box, but assembled, it’s 2′ – 3′ tall. it does make some noise when it cycles, but i don’t really hold that against it. any automatic box will make *some* noise, and this one is actually fairly quiet. it makes less noise than our dishwasher, and it doens’t bother us at all, even at night as we’re sleeping in the next room. some cats may be frightened by the motion and noise, but again, this is the case with most automatic boxes, and none of our cats are bothered by it one bit.

the Litter Robot works very differently from most automatic boxes. after your cat uses the litter box, there is a 7-minute delay. then, the globe part starts rotating. rather than a rake, the Litter Robot has a screen, kind of like plastic chicken wire. as the globe rotates, the mesh screen part of the globe allows good litter to pass through into a kind of holding compartment while the clumps remain in the globe. this sifting method is much gentler than a rake would be, so clumps tend to hold up well. the globe continues to rotate until 2 little waste ports open and the clumps drop down into the waste drawer. the globe then reverses, the good litter is returned to the globe, and ta da! that’s it. there are plenty of safety features built in as well. if your cat puts its weight on the step or gets into the globe while it’s turning, the robot senses the weight and stops cycling.

    why we love it:

    - it uses very little litter. in fact, there’s almost no such thing as too little litter for this box. it’s amazing how much longer a bag lasts, and eventually, this litter box will pay for itself because of how much money it saves on litter.

    - it holds quite a bit of waste. even with 5 cats, we can go 2 – 3 days without having to remove the waste and put in a new bag.

    - flexibility of “waste containment”. really, you don’t even have to put a bag in the waste drawer if you don’t want to. i wouldn’t recommend going without one, especially since trash bags, larger grocery or department store bags, and cheap-o dollar-store litter box liners will all work with it, but it’s an option.

    - odor control!! it’s amazing!! after 2 or 3 days without emptying-out, the smell that greets you when you open the waste drawer is just ungodly. but that’s a good thing, because that odor isn’t escaping into the apartment, and you’d never guess we have 5 cats.

    - you can use it with any clumping litter, not just “premium”, bentonite clay clumping litters. if you use Swheat Scoop, World’s Best, Feline Pine Clumping…yes, you *can* have your non-clay clumping litter *and* and automatic litter box!

    - 18 month full warranty. if anything goes wrong within a year and a half, we’re covered.

I’ve always been skeptical of automatic litter boxes, as years of cat ownership have taught me that litter sticks to everything, rakes and scoops ALWAYS eventually get clogged, and the best way to keep the litter box clean is by hand. Thanks to the Litter Robot, I’ve changed my mind. No rakes, no scoops, just a really clever design that does exactly what it is supposed to do. My two cats were a bit confused at first, but it took them less than a day to figure it out. I’m using a lot less litter and there is NO ODOR. It’s really amazing.

One thing to keep in mind is that this thing is BIG, and needs to be near a power outlet. I can’t fit it in the bathroom (where the old box was), nor would I want to with the power cord. It takes up a LOT of room in the hallway, but it is worth it. I’m planning on having a power outlet installed in a hall closet so I can move it in there.

Yes, it’s spendy, but if you can afford it, it’s a great product. I’m using generic plastic bags rather than the expensive ones that came with it, and it’s working just fine.

    Expensive but worth the price

We purchased our black Litter Robot last November. There is a little learning curve – once we are use to how it functions, we can’t imagine life without it.

    Advantage:

    - One cat, we clean once a week. With two cats, we empty the box every 3 days.

    - It eliminates odor pretty well. A spray of Lysol Neutra Air inside the globe would take out the remaining of the odor.

    - One of our cat is a clean freak and would not poo into any stinky litter. Once we get the Litter Robot, she stopped pooing outside the box.

    - We can use regular garbage bag for it

    Disadvantage:

    - Don’t be surprised if you find “gold” around the globe. The disposal doors sometime chop off a part of a clump litter or poo and drags it around exterior of the globe.

    - May be cats at Litter Robot’s lab has higher IQ. My cats are just not smart enough to always remember only way they can properly release is when facing outside the box. Couple times my cats had her butt sticking out and ended up made a nasty stinky mess all over.

    - Black is cool but high maintenance. Exterior of black color globe requires special cleaning. White clay stick to the exterior of the globe and looks quite nasty. Only way to clean it off is to use rubbing alcohol + toothbrush and wipe clean with wet towel.

Works just as it says it does. I find myself running into the other room just to watch it when it goes off. Invest in a nice litter absorbing rug to go in front of it (Petco sells a nice one also sold here Petmate Litter Catcher Mat Extra Large, Gray), because my cat jumps out fast and makes a mess. This thing saves you so much time it’s well worth the price.

I only had a problem with one of my two cats not taking to it well. She was a bit frightened of it at first so I would advise you to make sure it’s not blocking the other litter box. Give them time to adjust and follow the initiation process in the manual and what other people have said online.

    Enjoy!!!

    Best Litter Box Ever

This is the best litter box we’ve ever owned. It basically does all the work for you. I have two cats who took to it right away. I empty the drawer about every 6-7 days and don’t have any problems with litter odor like the old box which I had to scoop twice a day just to keep the laundry room odor-free. I think the litter stays cleaner too than it did in the old scooped out box. The screen seems to really sift out the smaller particles very well and dump then into the drawer so only the clean litter is left. The only thing I would put on my wish list for this litter box would be a flap for the opening. My bigger cat is a very aggressive digger and he kicks the litter right out of the opening so I have to sweep up in front of the box almost every day (at least it’s clean litter though). You won’t regret purchasing this box – it will definately make having indoor cats much more pleasant.
